ABOUT US: Smithfield Connection

The Smithfield Foods Learners to Leaders™ educational alliance is funded by the Smithfield-Luter Foundation, a nonprofit organization that serves as the philanthropic arm of Smithfield Foods, Inc.

Since its inception in 2002, the Smithfield-Luter Foundation has provided educational scholarships to the dependent children and grandchildren of Smithfield Foods' employees. Over the years, the Foundation has expanded its scholarship program to include seven universities and has granted 74 scholarships worth more than $800,000.

The Smithfield-Luter Foundation has expanded its goals to include partnerships designed to strengthen and nurture local communities. In 2005 it announced a gift of $5 million to Christopher Newport University and in February 2006 the Foundation announced a $5 million gift to the University of Virginia Health System for cancer research and treatment.
